The app Onestepcloser.to aims to enable consumers to affect their chosen brands’ societal and environmental commitment. Can this kind of consumer engagement lead to real social change?

Onestepcloser.to aims to create a mutual relationship between brand and consumer, consumers have the resources to make a difference and consumers get to pick which social and environmental initiatives they think should benefit.

It’s a pretty simple setup, you buy a product and scan it with your smart phone. You are then given several options with projects that the brand selling that product have chosen to support. Each brand is linked to an array of different projects. The projects are all linked to societal and environmental issues on some level, with the aim to solve these challenges, at least in the long run. The app determines your location when scanning the product and gives you the option to support either local or global projects. Ultimately, the brands will follow the consumers’ sway and support the chosen projects.

Additionally, the app enables consumers to share this data on their social media, increasing exposure and awareness and its new ways of encouraging engagement in social challenges. In that way, the app serves to enhance consumer power and to make societal engagement and awareness more accessible. Albeit paradoxically demanding a user to be a consumer to engage in this particular process, perhaps the app can pride itself of consumer engagement leading to real social change. The future will tellthe app is still in development.
